Our literacy program targets children in rural areas such as Moratuwa, Maggona, Wattala, Nuwara Eliya, and Hatton. We identify children who need extra help with literacy skills through the support of local churches. Our approach to literacy is different from the standard education and government curriculum, focusing on teaching children to read and write. We are not teaching the letters first. We have developed Sinhala and Tamil primers and are currently creating new storybooks and we are revising the Tamil primers. For now, we provide simple Bible storybooks for the children. The program currently benefits 956 students and 76 teachers, totaling 1,032 beneficiaries. Our main aim is to develop children’s reading and writing.
